Scope

A note on tradition

Sera Jey belongs to the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism, the tradition of Je Tsongkhapa and of His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. Descriptions of doctrine, curriculum, degrees, ritual and vocabulary on this site follow Geluk usage as taught at Sera Jey, and deliberately do not blend in the presentations of other Tibetan schools.

Figures given by different sources sometimes differ. The monastery's own foundation reports more than 4,800 monk-students, while some press accounts give lower numbers. Where sources disagree, this site follows the monastery's own publications and says so.

Illustration

The Courtyard artwork

The ten pieces in The Courtyard are headed by illustrations, not photographs. They were generated with an image model and commissioned for this site. They are there to set a mood, and they are the only images here that are not records of a real place.

Read them as drawings. None of them depicts a real person, a real building, or an event as it actually looked. This matters most for the piece on the re-establishment of 1970, whose illustration is an impression of what clearing and building looked like in that decade, not a document of it. The facts in each piece are sourced separately, and the sources are listed at the foot of the piece.
